There are many various strains of mold that come in all different colors. Some are harmless, and some can be very dangerous. As a homeowner in charge of your own maintenance, it is important to know how to differentiate between the many mold types. Below is some information that may help you in this endeavor.
Black Mold
Also known as Stachybotrys, black mold can take many various forms and shades of black. It can be very dangerous to people and animals. Therefore it is vital that you get rid of it immediately. Black mold thrives in areas with lots of moisture. It usually looks slimy with a dark greenish-black or gray color. It also has a very prominent odor that can contaminate the air in your home.
Bathroom Mold
Because of the constant warm air and moisture, the bathroom often houses mold growth. Aureobasidium, a type of pink mold, is commonly found in the bathroom around window frames and on caulking. Fusarium, another pink mold that is usually found on plants, can also be located on carpet, wallpaper, and other similar objects. Symptoms caused by this mold include:
- Hives
- Rashes
- Inflammation
- Respiratory problems
- Infection and bleeding of the lungs
- Allergic reactions
Basement Mold
It is very important to check the basement often for mold growth. Because the basement is usually moist and poorly ventilated, it is the perfect spot for a plethora of mold types to thrive. If the color of the mold is a light gray color, it is Aspergillus or Fusarium. If it is closer to black, it is either Stachybotrys or Cladosporium. To determine what type of dark mold you have, look at the texture. If the mold in the basement is slimy, it is most likely Stachybotrys. If not, then it is probably Cladosporium.
Other Mold Types
- Alternaria- This mold is often found outside, though it grows indoors as well and can spread easily. It can be found in showers or under sinks, and in buildings that have water damage or flooding. Symptoms caused by exposure to this mold include asthma attacks and allergic reactions.
- Trichoderma- It is a mold that grows on wet surfaces like damp carpet and wallpaper. Like Stachybotrys, Trichoderma produces mycotoxins that can cause similar health issues, and many people are allergic to it.
- Ulocladium-This one requires a lot of water to thrive. Therefore, it is frequently found in properties that have severe flooding and water damage. Many people are also allergic to this type of mold.
- Aureobasidium-As mentioned earlier, this mold is usually found in bathrooms and is black and pink in color. It grows on wallpaper and both painted and wooden surfaces. A lot of people are allergic to Aureobasidium.
